Laguna Gloria, Cultural and Historical Landscape Study

Laguna Gloria is a beautifully preserved 1916 estate once owned by Clara Driscoll and now devoted to the visual arts is an elegant oasis in the ever-changing residential fabric of west Austin. In February 2022 Acacia Heritage Consulting was hired to research and expand the context for Laguna Gloria to help support future interpretation, programming, and signage for the Museum. The goal of the effort was to bring greater inclusivity to the storytelling about the place history, to reach beyond the oft-recapitulated narratives centering around Clara Driscoll, the former owner of the estate, and explore the cultural landscape before and after her time. A primary point of research museum staff sought to pursue was to understand Native American presence and land use in the centuries prior to Clara Driscoll’s purchase of it.
